Aged Dependent, Remaining and Carer Relatives
Australian immigration for family members other than parents and children
may be possible for individuals who fall under the following categories:
- aged dependent relative,
- remaining relative, or
- carer.
In each case, you must be closely related to and sponsored by an Australian
citizen or permanent resident.
Your sponsor must be over 18 years of age
with the exception of applications under the carer category.
Aged Dependent Relative To be eligible for an Australian visa as an aged dependent relative, you must:
- be an aged person,
- be single, widowed, divorced or formally separated,
- have been dependent on your relative for basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing
for a period of at least three years prior to
your Australian visa application.
Remaining Relative To be eligible for an Australian visa as a remaining relative, you must:
- be the brother, sister or child of your sponsor,
- not have close family ties outside of Australia including the country where you currently reside, and
- be applying for Australian immigration to live with your family due to being
left on your own otherwise.
Carer To be eligible for an Australian visa as a remaining relative, you must:
- be sponsored by a relative suffering from serious medical conditions
which prevent them from performing practical functions required as part of their
daily life, and
- be willing to provide significant and continuing assistance to your
sponsor which cannot be obtained from any other relative or public services
such as hospitals.
